Sun Prairie Road Construction Alert

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (April 2026) — Spring has sprung and that means it’s the official start of road construction season. Multiple projects are set to impact residents in Sun Prairie this spring, summer, and fall, as the city moves forward with major street reconstructions and intersection improvements.

The projects—spanning Emerald Terrace, Montana Avenue, and key downtown-area intersections—will include roadway reconstruction, utility upgrades, and traffic signal improvements aimed at enhancing safety and long-term infrastructure reliability.

Residents are encouraged to review the project plans at the link below, or reach out to the project manager with questions or concerns.

Emerald Terrace, Coral Drive, and Garnet Drive Reconstruction Project

Construction Schedule: April 2026 through September 2026

Construction began on April 27, with initial work including erosion control installation, pulverization of existing asphalt pavement, and saw cutting of asphalt and concrete surfaces.

Tree removals and water main work are expected to begin April 29. Once water main installation is complete, crews will move into storm sewer extensions near the Davison Drive and Emerald Terrace intersection.

The project will be completed in phases to maintain access. The first phase will reconstruct Emerald Terrace from Severson Street to Davison Drive, including placement of the first layer of asphalt pavement to reopen access to businesses along that corridor.

City officials noted that the contractor will not perform private concrete work (such as driveways or sidewalks), despite inquiries from residents.

Traffic Impacts and What Drivers Should Know

As construction ramps up across Sun Prairie, residents and commuters can expect:

  • Lane closures and detours in active work zones
  • Temporary driveway access disruptions
  • Increased construction vehicle traffic
  • Daytime noise and delays

Drivers are encouraged to follow posted signage and allow extra travel time, particularly near business corridors and major intersections.

Why These Projects Matter

These infrastructure improvements are part of the city’s ongoing investment in road conditions, underground utilities, and traffic safety. Projects like water main replacements and storm sewer expansions are designed to reduce long-term maintenance issues and improve system reliability.

As construction season progresses in Sun Prairie, officials emphasize that timelines may shift due to weather conditions, contractor availability, and unforeseen underground utility challenges. Residents are encouraged to stay engaged by monitoring city updates, attending public meetings when available, and communicating directly with project contacts if issues arise. Staying informed and planning ahead can help minimize disruptions and ensure smoother travel throughout the duration of these projects.
