SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (April 19, 2026) — A Sun Prairie man was taken into custody Sunday afternoon following a reported armed neighbor disturbance that led to a multi-hour police standoff and evacuation of an apartment building on the city’s west side.
According to the Sun Prairie Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 10:40 a.m. to an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Sunfield Street after a caller reported that a neighbor was threatening them with a firearm.
When officers arrived, they made verbal contact with the suspect, who then allegedly made threats toward law enforcement. Officers withdrew from the immediate area and began evacuating residents from the building as a precaution while continuing attempts to communicate with the suspect.
Additional resources were called in, including the Madison Police Department SWAT team and crisis negotiators, as well as the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, which assisted with securing the perimeter. Emergency responders from the Madison Fire Department and Sun Prairie Fire and EMS also responded to the scene.
Police said the suspect initially refused to communicate and remained barricaded inside the apartment for several hours. Negotiators made repeated attempts to establish contact over the course of approximately five hours.
At about 4:00 p.m., the suspect agreed to speak with negotiators and ultimately surrendered without incident. No injuries were reported to the original caller, responding officers, or the suspect.
Residents were allowed to return to their apartments following the conclusion of the standoff, though authorities noted there may continue to be a police presence in the area as the investigation remains ongoing.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Kevin Djergou of Sun Prairie, was transported to the Dane County Jail. The Sun Prairie Police Department said it will refer multiple charges to the Dane County District Attorney’s Office, including disorderly conduct, second-degree recklessly endangering safety, threats to law enforcement, and failure to comply with an officer’s attempt to take a person into custody.
Authorities thanked assisting agencies for their coordinated response to the incident.
