April 15, 2026 – State Rep. Andrew Hysell has announced he will seek reelection to represent Wisconsin’s 48th Assembly District.

Hysell, a first-term legislator and practicing attorney was first elected in November of 2024. He said he is running again to continue work he began during his initial term in office.

“As a legislator, I have worked to protect our individual rights, strengthen public schools and public safety, and bring practical, results-driven leadership to Madison,” Hysell said in a statement. “My decision to run for reelection is motivated by my desire to keep fighting for the values that matter most to our community.”

The majority of voters in the 48th Assembly District are located in the City and Town of Sun Prairie, which comprises approximately two thirds of the district. A sliver of Madison’s east side, along with more rural areas including Bristol, Portland and Dodge County are also part of the 48th.

Hysell currently serves as ranking member of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, where he has focused on legal and policy issues affecting state law and constitutional rights. According to his campaign announcement, his legislative efforts have included work on a proposed constitutional amendment related to personal privacy, as well as legislation addressing insurance coverage for individuals with limb loss or limb differences.

More recently, Hysell has been an advocate for revising the state’s policy around levy limits and providing more assistance to local cities and school districts. When indexed for inflation, there’s over a $1 million shortfall in state aid to Sun Prairie compared to what they contributed 5 years ago. That’s a key reason why voters were asked to approve a referendum in April 2026.

Hysell’s reelection bid has drawn early support from several local and state leaders.

State Sen. Melissa Ratcliff said she has worked closely with Hysell and praised his leadership on issues affecting constituents.

“In his first term, Andrew has been a leader in addressing issues that matter most to our constituents,” Ratcliff said, citing his legislative work on privacy protections and health coverage.

Dane County Executive Melissa Agard, who previously represented the 48th District in the Assembly, also endorsed Hysell, pointing to their history of collaboration on issues such as local government funding and cannabis policy.

“Andrew has been proactive in engaging with my office and has shown a genuine commitment to ensuring his work is supportive of Dane County,” Agard said.

Sun Prairie Mayor Steve Stocker highlighted Hysell’s involvement at the local level, noting his attendance at City Council meetings and community events.

“The decisions made at the state level have a direct and lasting impact on Sun Prairie’s budget and day-to-day operations,” Stocker said. “Andrew has consistently shown a willingness to work closely with city leadership and remain accessible to the community.”

The election will take place in November 2026.
