The Sun Prairie Police Department is investigating a series of incidents involving dead or severely injured dogs found across northeastern Dane County over the past three months.
In partnership with Public Health Madison & Dane County Animal Services, police say four dogs—each believed to be pit bulls or similar breeds—were discovered between late December and mid-March. Three of the dogs were found dead, while a fourth was euthanized due to the severity of its injuries.
Authorities say it is not yet clear whether the incidents are connected and did not provide any evidence that the cases are linked. However, the geographic proximity (all were found in or around Sun Prairie), the limited 3-month time frame, similarity in breeds and the emaciated conditions all raised enough of a concern for the police to treat the cases seriously. Investigators are asking the public to come forward with any information.
The first incident occurred Dec. 29, 2025, when a dark brindle female puppy, approximately five months old, was found along Interstate 90/39 a few miles south of the U.S. Highway 51 interchange. The dog appeared to have been struck by a vehicle and was later euthanized due to its injuries.
On Jan. 7, 2026, an adult dog was found dead along Highway 19 near Twin Lane Road. The dog was described as black, dark brown, and white and was wearing a red-and-black flannel vest.
A third dog, a black-and-white female wearing a purple collar, was found Feb. 5 at a BP gas station at the corner of Main Street and Grove Street in Sun Prairie. Authorities said the dog was severely emaciated and may have been at the location for some time before being discovered by staff.
The most recent incident occurred March 17, when a brown-and-black male dog was found dead in the 100 block of Davidson Drive. A homeowner discovered the animal in the morning and reported that it had not been there the night before. Police said the dog was also severely emaciated.
Chapter 951 of Wisconsin Statute expressly governs animal cruelty or neglect and specifies a criminal punishment of up to 3.5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for felony violation resulting in the disfigurement or death of an animal.
